The first of 16 crown prosecution witnesses will take the stand Tuesday morning in the trial of a Regina couple accused of killing a four-year-old foster child and causing severe harm to her two-year-old sister.
On Monday the prosecution summarized its case against Kevin Goforth, 40, and Tammy Goforth, 39.
Prosecutors told the jury both children were skin and bones and covered in bruises when they were admitted to hospital in August of 2012. The four-year-old girl was unresponsive and died while the two-year-old girl managed to recover.
Both children were severely dehydrated and suffered from malnutrition. As well, the prosecutor says tape, fabric and a belt, were involved.
The defence team admitted the evidence at the trial will be shocking, disturbing and may anger some, but they encouraged the jury to listen to all of the evidence before coming to any conclusions about what happened to the girls.
They say evidence from both Tammy and Kevin Goforth will be presented which will show what was really going on in the home.
The Goforths are facing a charge of second-degree murder and a charge of unlawfully causing bodily harm. There are 14 jurors in the case – two extra in case any of the jurors have to be excused.
Only 12 will actually take part in the deliberation process. The trial is expected to last three weeks.
