After some recent wolf sightings near La Ronge, a local conservation officer is reminding the public to keep a safe distance.

Saskatchewan Environment conservation officer Derek Keast says wolves typically avoid populated areas but may venture close to communities in search of food.

“If people are keeping their food inside and eliminating the amount of attractants that would bring a wolf in closer to human contact that would go a long way to keeping wolves and other wildlife out of the community,” he says.

Keast says wolves are dangerous animals and if the public does encounter a wolf it is important to keep their distance.

“If they observe any unusual bold or aggressive behaviour, to contact us or Saskatchewan Environment right away.”

Keast says conservation officers typically receive a couple wolf sighting reports in the area every year.
