The President of the Manitoba Métis Federation says he is concerned a recent court decision could spark illegitimate claims for Métis citizenship.
David Chartrand says he remains cautious as a Senate Committee is examining the question of Métis identity.
Chartrand says he is fearful this week’s federal court ruling may lead some people to seek Métis designation, even if they’re not.
“We have a distinct homeland, a distinct base and a distinct culture,” he says. “Just because you have mixed blood and Indian ancestry, does not make you Métis.”
The federal court ruled Métis people should be included in section 91 of the 1867 Constitution.
Analysts say this could open the door for federal funding to Métis in different areas.
