A Blackfoot man says he is relieved the Montana Governor has decided not to grant clemency to the Canadian man who killed two of his friends.

Ronald Smith has been on death row since 1982 for killing Thomas Mad Man Junior and Harvey Running Rabbit.

Lyle Frank, who lives in southern Saskatchewan, says had the outgoing governor decided to grant Smith clemency it would have sent a negative message to the community.

Montana’s new governor Steve Bullock has not yet indicated how he will deal with the case.
