Saskatchewan’s police oversight body has been called in to investigate after a man was injured during an arrest on Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation earlier this week.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was notified following an incident on the First Nation on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, members of the Battlefords RCMP attempted to pull over a vehicle at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 6. The driver failed to stop for officers and pulled into the driveway of a nearby residence.
An initial investigation determined the driver was operating the vehicle with a suspended licence and had outstanding warrants for his arrest. Police arrested the driver at the scene without incident.
Two passengers were also inside the vehicle — an adult male and an adult female. Police requested that the male passenger exit the vehicle, but he did not comply with officers’ directions. Officers then removed the man from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.
EMS was called to the scene to assess the passenger, who was later released from police custody without charges.
The RCMP was subsequently notified that the man required further medical treatment for an injury. Due to the nature of the injury sustained during police involvement, SIRT was notified and has initiated an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest. Police did not indicate the nature or the severity of the injury.
SIRT investigates incidents where an individual dies or suffers serious injury as a result of an interaction with police in Saskatchewan.
