A Nipawin man is facing numerous criminal charges after RCMP seized a loaded handgun, illicit drugs and other evidence during an early morning traffic stop.

According to Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP, officers were conducting patrols in Nipawin at about 4:15 a.m. on September 26 when they stopped a vehicle to check the driver’s licence, registration and sobriety.

Police say open alcohol was observed inside the vehicle, and the driver was subsequently arrested for impaired driving.

During a search, officers located a loaded handgun on the driver. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 21 grams of cocaine, four grams of methamphetamine, 44 grams of hydromorphone, fentanyl patches, ammunition, weapons, cash, drug trafficking paraphernalia, identification belonging to other individuals and a wallet that had previously been reported stolen.

As a result of the investigation, 39-year-old Jered Waddington, of Nipawin, has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, multiple firearms offences and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Waddington made his first court appearance in Melfort Provincial Court on October 1.

RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing.
