Canadian Energy Metals Corp. (CEM) says it has reached a significant milestone at its Thor Project near Tisdale, Saskatchewan, after achieving proof-of-concept for producing Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA), a key material used in aluminum production. The announcement marks the latest step in the company’s efforts to develop a domestic source of critical minerals and alumina products from black shale deposits in northeastern Saskatchewan.

The company said testing has demonstrated a process that can produce SGA from boehmite derived from High Purity Alumina (HPA) and Chemical Grade Alumina (CGA) precursors found within the Thor Project’s black shales. According to CEM, the resulting samples consistently met the same purity specifications as SGA produced through the Bayer Process, the industry-standard method used to refine bauxite into alumina.

The proof-of-concept expands on earlier work announced in January 2026, when the company reported successful recovery of HPA and CGA from the Thor Project deposits. Company officials say the latest achievement broadens the range of potential alumina products that could be produced from the resource.

At the same time, CEM has formally launched a prefeasibility study for the project. The study is designed to evaluate mining, refining and smelting pathways, improve confidence in the resource, estimate capital and operating costs, assess infrastructure and logistics requirements, and determine whether the project is technically and economically viable enough to advance to a full feasibility study.

“The processes we’ve developed over the last two years with our leading engineering partners are rapidly advancing North America’s first fully integrated aluminum project,” said Christopher Hopkins, president and chief executive officer of CEM. The company says it is continuing technical work, process optimization and exploration activities as part of the prefeasibility study and broader development plans.

CEM says the Thor Project’s potential to support a North American alumina supply chain is particularly important as global supply chain disruptions remain a concern. The company believes a domestic source of alumina and associated critical metals could help strengthen resource security and reduce reliance on foreign supply.
