Elders in Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation have expressed strong support for welcoming the Saskatchewan Marshals Service into the community to work alongside the RCMP on public safety initiatives.
The show of support came during community presentations and an Elders Meeting at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall, where Elders voted by a show of hands following a presentation on the proposed partnership.
Councillor Tyler Smallchild, who oversees the Justice and Elders portfolios, said bringing the Saskatchewan Marshals Service to BOCN is an important step toward helping members feel safe while living, working and raising families within the Nation.
“As leaders for BOCN, we have a responsibility to make strategic decisions that reflect the guidance of our Elders and the best interests of all members, both on and off reserve. We are confident the Saskatchewan Marshals Service will help strengthen public safety within our Nation,” said Councillor Smallchild.
BOCN says it remains committed to exploring collaborative approaches to community safety, crime prevention and investigative efforts to help build a safe, secure and healthy community for current and future generations.
