The Government of Saskatchewan has officially presented a $40,000 grant to the community of Wadin Bay in recognition of its leadership in wildfire prevention and preparedness.
First announced in June 2026, the grant is being provided retroactively to support local safety investments that Wadin Bay had already made to strengthen its fire defenses. Those proactive planning and mitigation efforts proved vital in protecting the community during the severe 2025 Pisew wildfire.
Michael Weger, Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, visited Wadin Bay on Wednesday to hand-deliver the cheque directly to local leadership.
“I have seen firsthand the dedication and leadership efforts made by this community in the face of devastating wildfires,” Minister Weger said. “As part of our government’s 11 immediate actions in response to the 2025 wildfire season, I am proud to provide this grant to a community that is leading the way in protecting its residents.”
The retroactive funding comes after several recommendations from the independent MNP review of Saskatchewan’s 2025 wildfire response.
The review emphasized the necessity of strengthening regional fuel management programs through close collaboration with local partners.
The province expects to release full details regarding the broader grant program for other proactive communities in the near future.
