Two Saskatchewan First Nations have reached landmark settlements totaling more than $209.5 million with the federal government to resolve historic agricultural benefit claims.
Muskeg Lake Cree Nation will receive $121 million, while The Key First Nation will receive $88.4 million.
The claims stem from Canada’s failure to fulfill promises under Treaties 4 and 6 to provide farming equipment, seeds, and livestock as buffalo populations declined in the 19th century.
Federal officials announced the agreements over the weekend alongside Indigenous leaders.
“This settlement marks a significant milestone and reinforces our responsibility to invest in our Nation, advance our priorities, and create opportunities for future generations,” said Muskeg Lake Cree Nation Chief Kelly Wolfe.
Chief Dustin Dayan Brass of The Key First Nation called the agreement an important step toward economic reconciliation and a renewed nation-to-nation relationship.
