Cancer remains a major health concern in Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency emphasizes early diagnosis, screening programs and access to treatment to help patients manage cancer outcomes.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is rolling out a free, virtual LiveWell with Cancer self-management program starting this September that can be accessed online or through the phone.
The program aims to help people navigate life while living with cancer.
“It’s a six-week workshop, two and a half hours, it’s very engaging and gives people the opportunity to be with others that might be struggling with a similar situation,” said Justine Powell, a chronic disease health educator with the SHA and one of seven LiveWell coordinators within Saskatchewan overseeing the program.
LiveWell programs have been offered in Saskatchewan since 2002 that started with the LiveWell with chronic conditions workshop, then the SHA began offering the LiveWell with chronic pain workshop in 2012.
“It’s a self-management workshop, that means we are providing self-management tools to participants in a really supportive, highly participatory environment, and it helps people to gain skills and confidence to manage their health and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle,” said Powell.
The workshop will cover topics that include techniques to deal with symptoms such as fatigue, pain, sleeplessness, shortness of breath, stress, emotional problems, body image and fear of recurrence.
Peer leaders help lead the workshops and support people living with cancer.
The program is intended for all cancer patients and Powell said, “I think anybody at any stage in cancer will benefit and find things that are helpful.”
