Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man died while in RCMP custody at the Turtleford detachment.
RCMP say officers executed a warrant at a residence on Thunderchild First Nation on Tuesday, July 29, as part of an ongoing investigation. A 37-year-old man was arrested without incident and taken to the Turtleford detachment cells at about 1:30 p.m.
Police say the man experienced medical distress approximately 90 minutes later while in custody.
RCMP officers immediately began providing medical assistance before emergency medical personnel arrived at the detachment. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s family has been notified.

SIRT has determined the incident falls within its mandate and will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death.
