The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued an overdose alert for Saskatoon after emergency responders reported a significant increase in overdose incidents over the past several days.
According to the alert, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to 90 overdose-related calls between July 17 and July 20.
Officials say the severity of cases increased each day, with many requiring multiple doses of naloxone, CPR and assisted ventilation.
Health officials say the substance responsible for the overdoses has not been identified.
The alert notes that fentanyl or other opioids may be involved, but the exact composition remains unknown.
The Ministry of Health is urging people to call 911 immediately if someone is experiencing an overdose, carry a Take Home Naloxone Kit and avoid using substances alone.
The overdose alert is scheduled to remain in effect until July 28.
