A post-secondary graduate from Île-à-la-Crosse is being recognized for blending education with community impact.
Hailey Burnouf recently completed the two year Design and Manufacturing Engineering Technology diploma program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Saskatoon. Her studies combined mechanical engineering theory with hands-on training in areas such as welding, machining, and metal fabrication.
Burnouf says one of her most meaningful projects involved supporting the development of a wild rice harvester. Her role focused on creating detailed fabrication drawings and 3D models that will allow builders to replicate wild rice harvesting boats.
She worked with Sask. Polytechnic and the wild rice operations, allowing her to apply her education directly to work that benefits her home community.
Burnouf describes the recognition of receiving the Reconciliation in Action Award, as a reflection not only of her own efforts, but also the support of her family, friends, and community.
“The award is a reminder that even when the journey is difficult, the support from your family and community can carry you through,” said Burnouf.
The transition from a northern community to post-secondary education in the city was challenging, particularly in a demanding engineering program. Despite those challenges, Burnouf says she remained focused on representing her community and encouraging Indigenous and female representation in fields where both remain underrepresented.
“You never know what can happen until you try, taking that first step, it can open doors you didn’t expect,” said Burnouf.
She encourages others to explore post-secondary options by researching programs and speaking directly with faculty.
Following graduation, Burnouf will begin work as a junior technologist with Cameco’s electrical and instrumentation department in Saskatoon. She previously worked at Cameco’s Rabbit Lake Operation through a summer student program and says the experience helped guide her career path.
Burnouf will start her new role in mid-July, following the upcoming celebrations marking Île-à-la-Crosse 250th anniversary. It will be a week long celebration with traditional food, hide tanning, skiff making, and great music brought to you by Black Hawk, just to name a few of the fun events at the Île-à-la-Crosse 250th.
