The Government of Saskatchewan says it continues to expand programs and services aimed at addressing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and supporting affected families.

Marking seven years since the release of the National Inquiry’s final report, the province says more than 170 families are currently receiving assistance through Missing Persons Liaison programs and the Family Information Liaison Unit.

These services help families access information, navigate government systems and connect with support programs.

Justice Minister Tim McLeod said Saskatchewan remains focused on addressing the root causes of gender-based violence while strengthening protections for those at risk.

The province highlighted legislation including Clare’s Law, The Cyberstalking and Coercive Control Act, and measures aimed at combating human trafficking.

The government also pointed to its participation in the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, which is providing $20.3 million over four years to support programs and services across Saskatchewan.

In addition, the province’s MMIWG+ Community Response Fund has supported 83 community-led projects since 2022, providing up to $40,000 per project to enhance violence prevention and community safety initiatives.

Officials say public awareness campaigns, training initiatives and community partnerships will continue as Saskatchewan works with Indigenous organizations and communities to improve safety for Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit-plus people across the province.

While the province highlighted new legislation, funding programs and support services, Indigenous advocates have previously argued governments across Canada have been too slow to fully implement the National Inquiry’s 231 Calls for Justice.

The Assembly of First Nations has said it has yet to see sufficient “on-the-ground changes” to end violence against Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse people and continues to call for full implementation of the inquiry’s recommendations.
