Environment Canada is warning that weather conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds across parts of Saskatchewan, including the Battlefords and Meadow Lake regions.

The weather agency says the funnel clouds could develop beneath rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms moving through the area Tuesday afternoon.

While most funnel clouds of this type remain weak and do not reach the ground, forecasters say there is a possibility some could intensify into weak landspout tornadoes.

Landspout tornadoes are generally short-lived and often cause limited damage, but they can still be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs and toss debris.

Environment Canada is urging residents to take any funnel cloud sightings seriously and be prepared to seek shelter if one develops nearby.

The weather agency notes that these types of funnel clouds can form quickly and with little warning.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and forecasts throughout the day for the latest information.
