Creighton RCMP are warning the public to remain vigilant after counterfeit currency was reportedly passed at a local business.

Police say they received a report on June 15 that counterfeit $50 bills had been used in Creighton. Investigators determined all of the seized bills carried the same serial number: AHU5885903.

RCMP are reminding residents and business owners to carefully inspect cash during transactions and be aware of common signs of counterfeit currency.

According to police, counterfeit bills may contain security features that appear to be stickers or overlays, feel different than genuine currency, or be easily damaged or torn. Bills may also differ in size, shape or colour, contain mismatched holographic images or numbers, or feature unusual black lines or bars.

Creighton RCMP continue to investigate the incident.

Police note that it is a criminal offence in Canada to knowingly use or recirculate counterfeit money.

Anyone who believes they have received counterfeit currency is asked to contact their local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
