wâhkôhtowin School in Saskatoon is celebrating two major milestones with a community powwow this week: the school’s 50th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its nêhiyâwiwin Cree Language and Culture Program.

The powwow is Thursday, May 28th at  wâhkôhtowin School and will be outside, running from  9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The event welcomes community members to take part in cultural celebrations, dance competitions, and drumming.

Organizers say the powwow is an opportunity to honour Cree language, culture, and the generations of students and families connected to the school.

The celebration features Master of Ceremonies Sanford Strongarm, Arena Director Chief Delbert Wapass, and Drum Boss Marc Longjohn.

Wild Horse of North Battleford will serve as the host drum, while all drum groups participating in the contest will be honoured.

Dance competitions are being held for Tiny Tots, Juniors, Teens, Adults, and Golden Age participants.
