Sturgeon Lake First Nation has declared a state of emergency due to rapidly rising water levels.

According to leaders, flooding is affecting access along Highways 355 and 788, as well as the main traffic bridge.

As of Tuesday afternoon, they say, water was just 12 inches below the bridge deck, raising concerns it could soon be overtopped.

If the bridge floods, access in and out of the community could be cut off completely.

Emergency support has been authorized, and residents are urged to avoid flooded areas and unnecessary travel.
