The Government of Saskatchewan is inviting public feedback on proposed amendments to The Adoption Act, 1998, and The Adoption Regulations, 2003.

The province says the changes are intended to modernize adoption legislation while strengthening children’s safety, identity, and community connections.

A key focus of the proposed amendments is ensuring Indigenous identity, culture, language, and community remain central within the adoption process.

Social Services Minister Terry Jenson says adoption “builds strong families and changes lives,” adding the proposed changes are designed to better reflect today’s social, cultural, and legal realities.

The proposed amendments include measures to enhance cultural continuity, reduce barriers to family connections, clarify residency requirements, and strengthen safeguards in interprovincial and independent adoptions.

The government says feedback from adoptees, families, service providers, and Indigenous organizations will help ensure the legislation reflects lived experiences and operational realities.
