A historic decision from the Court of King’s Bench has certified the Île-à-la-Crosse residential school Survivors’ class action and approved settlement agreements with Canada and Saskatchewan.
Justice R.C. Wempe noted there is a strong presumption of fairness in settlements negotiated by experienced counsel.
The agreement marks the largest class action settlement in Saskatchewan’s history.
Survivor Antoinette Lafleur, who attended the school at just four years old, says she hopes the ruling allows families to finally move forward.
Representative plaintiff Louis Gardiner added many Survivors did not live to see the outcome.
Métis Nation–Saskatchewan leaders say the decision represents a significant step toward healing and closure.
The settlement now enters the compensation phase, which includes a $10 million legacy fund for the community.
More information on next steps is expected to be shared with Survivors soon.
