An appeal by the Crown in a high profile impaired driving case in Saskatoon has been denied.

Taylor Kennedy was accused of impaired driving causing the death of 9-year-old Baeleigh Maurice in September 2021.

Kennedy wasn’t charged until 2022 and her trial would be dealt several delays over a lengthy process.

In 2024, Kennedy would eventually have the charges against her stayed as the courts ruled she was not tried within a reasonable time.

The decision caused outrage from many supporters of the Maurice family who called for justice.

Crown prosecutors would eventually launch an appeal of the decision in November 2025.

On Friday, the decision on the appeal from the Saskatchewan Court Of Appeal was released where it was announced that the appeal would be dismissed.

While the Appeals Court decision did say there should have been extra time given for a Covid-19 delay and other delays caused by the defence, they still say the trial significantly exceeded what is allowable under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Crown’s appeal has therefore been dismissed.
