Snow, winds, and icy roads couldn’t keep the Métis citizens from attending the ground-blessing event held in Prince Albert for the 18 rent-to-own units project by the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan(MN-S).

When it’s good news, everyone wants to be there to celebrate, and today that was obvious.

The Métis Nation of Saskatchewan gathered elders and community leaders to be present for the ground blessing event where Elder Diane Fiddler did a prayer and blessed the project grounds.

Glen McCallum, president of the Métis Nation Saskatchewan, said, “The more we build and the more we create good partnership relationships, the greater the future is going to be for the young generations to come and to be able to capitalize on owning their own home. This is a great program, and I hope we can continue working on other programs to be able to complement the relationship that we do have with the city and the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan.”

The project is being built by 3twenty Modular, and they are on schedule to have them delivered in the fall to the new West Hill neighbourhood subdivision. The area of the new subdivision is near the Victoria Hospital, beside the MN-S new Ma-Faamii. The Ma-Faamii will be one of the main Métis hubs in Prince Albert, where you can go and inquire about programs available to Métis citizens including the rent-to-own program. You just have to wait a little longer, as they are not open to the public yet but it will be opeining it’s doors soon.

This new subdivision has the potential to help Metis citizens secure a home and some savings when compared to a conventional mortgage.

Mathieu Gaudet, Director of Housing and Homelessness, explained “We can confidently say that compared to a conventional 25-year mortgage, citizens will save about $200,000 over that whole course by renting with us and going through a rental program versus buying on the market.”

The rent-to-own program is still being finalized, but it sounds like it will be open to working Metis families. MBC will follow up with the MN-S in the summer to hear more about the program and how to apply for consideration.
