For Thomas McDermott, the launch of Woodland Cree Helicopters is more than a business milestone—it’s the fulfillment of a dream shaped by family, patience, and generations of resilience. At 1pm on February 3rd, 2026 Woodland Cree Helicopters officially celebrating their grand opening with the celebration taking place in Smeaton.

Based in Smeaton, Saskatchewan, Woodland Cree Helicopters officially began operations in April 2024, with plans to expand to a second base near Amisk, creating new opportunities across northern Saskatchewan and into Manitoba.

“Patience is the name of the game. Things take time, and we’re going to get there,” said Thomas McDermott, co-owner and operator.

Thomas grew up in Denare Beach, where living beside a helicopter base sparked a lifelong fascination with flight. That early curiosity stayed with him through the years. From a long career as a paramedic and finally into the cockpit.

“Little did I know when I was asking questions as a kid, I was already doing ground school,” explained Thomas.

At the heart of Woodland Cree Helicopters is a deeply personal tribute to Thomas’s grandmother, Marie May Custer McDermott, a residential school survivor whose strength made everything possible.

“If my Granny didn’t make it, I wouldn’t be here today. This is for her,” said Thomas.

Community remains central to the company’s mission. Over the past year, Woodland Cree Helicopters has provided helicopter rides at powwows, sports days, and community gatherings—giving elders, youth, and families their first experience of flight.

“The seed has been planted—just like it was planted in me when I was young,” said Thomas.

As Woodland Cree Helicopters looks ahead, Thomas says his goal is to grow the business responsibly and eventually pass it down to the next generation—ensuring the legacy continues.

“Someday I want to hand this down to my grandchildren. We’re here to stay,” explained Thomas.

From honouring ancestors to inspiring future pilots, Woodland Cree Helicopters represents what can happen when perseverance, community, and purpose come together—and take flight.
