The Prince Albert Police Service is reminding residents to take extra precautions to prevent vehicle thefts during the winter months, as thefts in the community continue to rise.
In 2025, police reported 417 vehicle thefts, a 29 percent increase from 2024, with 122 occurring in the fourth quarter.
This year in January, 41 reported thefts have occurred, which is 16 more than the same period last year.
Police say thefts increase when temperatures drop and are urging the public never to leave vehicles running and unattended.
To help prevent theft, residents are encouraged to use a remote starter or remain inside their vehicle while it warms up.
Ensure vehicles are locked at all times; use a steering wheel lock; remove all keys; fully close windows and doors; park in well-lit areas; and activate alarm systems.
Valuables such as cellphones, electronics, jewelry, personal documents, shopping bags, garage door openers, and cash should never be visible inside a vehicle.
The Prince Albert Police Service encourages members of the public to report crime and or suspicious activity to police by calling 306-953-4222.
