The Government of Saskatchewan is launching an independent Review of hospital safety and security in the province.

The review comes after hospital workers have been speaking out against unsafe working conditions in hospital emergency departments in the province.

The provincial government says the review will be undertaken “as quickly as possible” and will examine current practices and provide recommendations to help improve safety.

“Patients, visitors, and staff must be safe in health care facilities in Saskatchewan,” saidHealth Minister Jeremy Cockrill in a media release. “The independent review will give us an assessment of security currently in place at facilities and help identify improvements to support safer environments where people are providing and receiving care.”

The government also says immediate action is underway to strengthen hospital security including the implementation of metal detectors.

The launch of the review also comes just over a week after Trevor Dubois died after an altercation with security at a hospital in Saskatoon.

His death is under investigation by both the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
