Residents of Pelican Narrows are being asked to conserve water.

The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nations says crews are working on problems with the community’s water intake system.

The issue is limiting the amount of water entering the treatment system.

Residents are advised to boil tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth or making infant formula.

“The next 48 to 72 hours are critical,” said PBCN Vice Chief Justin Halcrow in a media release about the situation sent out Wednesday night. “If we lose circulation in the system, the consequences could be catastrophic for homes and community infrastructure during winter conditions.”

Schools in Pelican Narrows have been closed for the remainder of the week.

Bottled water is being distributed with priority going to Elders, medically vulnerable people and high-occupancy households.

At this time, PBCN leaders say there is no confirmed timeline for a full resolution and they say updates will be issued as they come available.
