The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team says an RCMP officer involved shooting almost two years ago fell within the range of the law.
In December 2025, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed by an officer during an altercation on Red Earth Cree Nation.
SIRT was called in to investigate the incident the incident. The provincial investigation team released the findings of the investigation Thursday afternoon.
The SIRT report details the event that led the man into an altercation with police eventually leading to the fatal shooting.
RCMP officers began their investigation due to multiple reports of gunshots on Red Earth Cree Nation.
Three people were identified as suspects and two of them were taken into custody.
In the attempt to locate the third man, a 25-year-old from Red Earth Cree Nation, the report says the man had a shotgun that he fired at a police vehicle. An RCMP officer would be injured by the gunshot.
According to the report, the man would then administer a non-fatal gunshot to himself. He would then begin approaching officers ignoring verbal instructions. The report says the man would then aim the shotgun at officers leading one officer to discharge several rounds from his carbine rifle. The report says the man continued to reach for the gun and a second volley of shots were fired eventually killing him.
The SIRT findings say the risk to the officers was both “immediate and serious” and say couldn’t be alleviated with a lesser use of force.
Given the gravity of the threat, SIRT says officers involved used reasonable force to defend themselves and no criminal charges will be suggested.
