Premier Scott Mow has apologized in the legislature for not visiting a northern village sooner after it was ravaged by a summer wildfire.

The premier says he should have been there to support the community of Denare Beach.

Moe made a surprise visit to Denare Beach in September, with local officials saying they wished he had come sooner.

His government has been criticized over a lack of firefighting equipment and a shortage of air tankers during the worst of the wildfire season.

In the meantime, the Saskatchewan government is preparing for an independent review of this year’s wildfire season.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has secured M-N-P to carry out a review that will focus on the agency’s response, evaluation and recovery aspects.

Officials say the company has experience in doing post-incident assessments and evaluations of similar size and complexity.

The review is expected to be finished ahead of the 2026 wildfire season.
