The Prince Albert Grand Council is thanking volunteers and donors who helped out after 1,500 food hampers were destroyed in a fire.

The incident happened this past Friday when a transport semi-trailer hauling the pre-packed food hampers caught fire.

The hampers were full of staple items intended for PAGC’s annual Thanksgiving hamper distribution.

The organization says rebuilding efforts began immediately with donors and volunteers working throughout the weekend to ensure new hampers would be available for the hamper program later this week.

“Within hours of the fire, our community rallied,” said Betty Marleau, Director of Agriculture and one of the main organizers. “The teamwork and generosity we’ve witnessed show the strength of our people and partners.”

The hampers will be given out at the PAGC Student Residence this Wednesday and Thursday with more than 3,600 people registered for distribution.

“The outpouring of help has been overwhelming,” said PAGC Finance Director Gene Dere who is one of the other main organizers. “Thanks to our partners and everyone who came out to help, we can continue serving families who rely on these hampers.”

The PAGC says the hamper giveaway will take place as planned.
