The Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies is celebrating the launch of a new IT program in Regina.
The post-secondary institution says a $1.3 million investment from the federal government allowed them to expand the previously Saskatoon-based Information Technology Support Specialist program.
The first cohorts of the new program in Regina begins this fall with 25 students this year.
SIIT says the expansion will help meet the growing demand for Indigenous professionals in careers in IT support.
“This project reflects what SIIT does best — meeting learners where they are, creating pathways into meaningful work, and responding to the needs of community and industry,” said Andrea Sanderson, Dean of Post-Secondary at SIIT.”
The expansion funding from Ottawa was made available through PrairiesCan uder the Regional Innovation Ecosystems Program.
“By investing in expanding IT training at SIIT, we’re helping more students — especially Indigenous learners — gain the skills they need for good, high-paying jobs in the digital economy”, said the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State. “Employers across Saskatchewan are looking for people with these exact skills, whether it’s in health care, small business, or government services.”
