Any staff or students accessing equity based opportunities designated for Metis people at the University of Regina will now have to provide proof.

The university has signed a Citizenship Agreement with the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan.

The agreement will aim to ensure anyone who access opportunities such as admissions, scholarships, hiring or research funding specifically designated for Metis citizens are verified citizens of the MN-S registry.

“The MN–S government welcomes agreements such as this for two important reasons; it advances opportunities for our young Métis people and opens new avenues to explore on their career paths. Secondly, it clearly demonstrates the work our government has done to strengthen relationships with institutions, build trust in our Nation, and validate our citizenship processes,” said MN–S President Glen McCallum.

Both the university and the MN-S called the agreement an important step in Reconciliation.

The Metis Nation signed a similar agreement with the University of Saskatchewan nearly 4 years ago.
