In a statement released August 7, 2025, the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Council shares that the 2027 NAIG will no longer be taking place in Calgary, Alberta, in 2027.

The hosting privileges previously given to the Calgary Host Society have been withdrawn by the NAIG Council after a period of great contemplation and careful consideration.

The NAIG Council has collaborated extensively with the Host Society over the last two years to support their efforts by offering resources, advice, support in building capacity, and outside knowledge to help with the planning and budgeting procedures necessary to ensure a successful Games.

It became increasingly evident that crucial milestones could not be reached in spite of everyone’s combined efforts.

The NAIG Council has made the tough but vital decision to withdraw the previously granted hosting rights for NAIG 2027 in order to preserve the integrity of the Games and guarantee the long-term viability of the NAIG movement.

The NAIG Council expressed in their statement:

“We extend our sincere appreciation to all those who contributed to the Calgary 2027 initiative, particularly Dr. Chief Littlechild, who has served as Chair of the Host Society Board since March 2025. Their dedication and commitment to the vision of NAIG have been deeply valued.

We recognize that this announcement may be deeply disappointing to Indigenous athletes, coaches, families, and communities across Turtle Island who were looking forward to gathering in Calgary. We want to assure everyone that the NAIG Council remains steadfast in its commitment to Indigenous youth and to the ongoing advancement of the NAIG movement.”

They are now looking for a new path forward that will not impede the games.
