The Metis Nation-Saskatchewan is calling for immediate help over issues around alcohol, drugs, and violence in Metis communities.
The MN-S declared a state of emergency over the issue on Thursday.
The Metis nation is now calling on both the provincial and federal governments to provide supports to help these issues.
“Over 30 years ago, Pinehouse was dubbed the ‘drinking capital of Canada’,” said MN-S President Glen McCallum. “The community came together and established the ‘Recovery Lake Program’ which is land-based treatment that has helped turn things around for our Métis citizens and their families. The blueprint is there. Let’s get to work, collaborate with our provincial and federal partners, and build upon that foundation.”
The MN-S says discussions have begun on a possible treatment facility near Batoche.
The state of emergency was approved by the Provincial Metis Council earlier this week.
