The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says many of the First Nations evacuees are asking to be hosted in First Nations communities.

The FSIN as now calling on any First Nation community willing to take in evacuees to contact them.

Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation was the first First Nation community to take in evacuees at the Rez Cross Emergency Evacuation Centre.

Wahpeton Dakota Nation, Montreal Lake Cree Nation, Muskoday First Nation and the Little Red reserve have indicated they are wiling to take in evacuees. Places have also been set up at Sakwatamo Lodge at James Smith Cree Nation and evacuees with campers may be able to find space at the Batoche Festival Grounds or at the Dumont Lodge on the grounds.

The FSIN says they want to build a database of First Nation communities willing to take in evacuees.

The organization also says any costs associated with hosting and feeding evacuees will be reimbursed.

In the meantime, the FSIN says they are calling on businesses and organizations to donate supplies.

“We are asking businesses and organizations to open your hearts and share your supplies with those who have been forced to leave their homes and possessions behind. Let’s come together and help all our people when they need it the most.”
