Chief Kirby Constant of James Smith Cree Nation released a statement to social media after they experienced a fire, which destroyed homes and displaced community members.

“I want to take a moment to update our members following the devastating fires this past weekend that destroyed four homes in our community. These losses have deeply impacted us, especially the families who have been displaced. Our thoughts remain with them, and we continue to offer support as they navigate this difficult time,” said Chief Kirby Constant. “As your Chief, I have formally reached out to both the provincial and federal governments to request an urgent and coordinated response. A request has been sent to key leaders, including our Member of Parliament and provincial Ministers, calling for immediate action and a meeting to discuss the following priorities: rebuilding the homes that were lost and providing support for the affected families; establishing a proactive emergency preparedness and fire response plan; ensuring that our Nation receives equitable access to emergency services and resources.”

Four homes were destroyed by a fire in the community this week and the leadership is focusing on solutions now.

“We need the Province and Canada to assist, coordinate with us, and commit to solutions that protect our people and homes,” explained Constant. “As part of our immediate response, I’m also pleased to share that we are purchasing two new trucks, which will be equipped with fire caddies that we purchased from Tyrone Bird. These will strengthen our local fire response and give us greater capacity to protect our homes and families moving forward. Our leadership is committed to moving forward with strength and urgency. We will keep you informed and remain focused on solutions that protect the members of James Smith Cree Nation.”
