The Regina Police Service Cold Case Unit has concluded an investigation into the 1996 death of Muriel Roxanne Demorest, a 22-year-old woman located deceased in an alley in the 1200 Block of King Street. The death of Muriel Demorest was originally classified as accidental. It appeared she was fatally injured while changing a tire on a vehicle.
Over the past number of years, new statements to police regarding this case led investigators to review the file. On March 27, 2025, the Regina Police Service, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, deemed the manner of death to be homicide.
Police have reasonable and probable grounds to believe the suspect intentionally caused the death of Muriel Demorest. The suspect cannot be charged with murder due to his own recent death. His identity will not be disclosed, as he is unable to be formally charged. The investigation is officially concluded, 29 years later.
The family of Muriel Demorest has been notified of this development.
“The Regina Police Service remains committed to seeking truth, no matter how much time has passed,” explains Acting Chief Lorilee Davies. “As technology evolves and new information comes to light from witnesses, our investigators continue to review historical cases with fresh eyes and open minds.”
The public is reminded to bring forward any information that could lead to a break in an investigation – no matter how insignificant the detail might seem.
“The unwavering dedication of our investigators reflects our commitment to accountability and building trust with the community we serve,” adds Acting Chief Davies. “We want the public to know that we will never stop pursuing answers.”
