English River First Nation and the federal government are announcing a major settlement.

In a media release sent out Thursday afternoon it was announced the Government of Canada would pay the First Nation just over $90,000,000 to settle long standing claims related to the federal government not providing the First Nation assistance to develop their own agriculture industry, the claim popularly know as Cows and Plows.

English River First Nation Chief Alfred Dawatzare said they have been waiting a long time for a settlement, which he added is a step forward in regards to ensuring treaty commitments are kept.

“This settlement, approved by the members, is one small step in ensuring that Canada lives up to its promises,” he said.

Dawatzare said the First Nation will continue to work to ensure Canada lives up to its treaty commitments. The chief said the funds will be used to benefit the nation’s members.

Federal Crown Indigenous Relations Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the settlement is important in regards to the relationship between Canada and English River.

“With the successful resolution of this settlement agreement, we take a step to renew Canada’s relationship with English River First Nation,” he said.

The Crown Indigenous Relations Minister said the government will continue to to work with English River to rebuild trust in their relationship to help correct past wrongs.
