In the wake of a shooting tragedy on Red Earth Cree Nation this week – students in the community will be put on early Christmas break.

On Tuesday morning, RCMP announced that a 25-year-old man was killed in an RCMP officer involved shooting on the First Nation.

Shortly after, Red Earth’s Edcuation Director Fabian Head issued a statement announcing the school’s early closure for Christmas break as the community reels from the tragedy.

“The board understands that the staff and students will react in different ways to the loss of a community member and the situation or circumstances of the event,” read the statement.

The statement also says a plan will be put in place for supports when students return to school.

According to the RCMP, no charges have been laid as a result of the incident.

Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating the man’s death.
