The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) is putting out a call for support after a violent incident in one of their communities.

In a media release sent out late Thursday afternoon the First Nation said a shooting which happened this Wednesday in Pelican Narrows shows there is a need for urgent action to improve community safety.

PBCN leadership has previously met with officials from the provincial government to talk about ways to improve community safety. The First Nation’s leadership said they have developed a plan to help combat the root causes of violence in the community.

Chief Karen Bird said the recent shooting shows steps need to be taken as soon as possible to improve public safety in Pelican Narrows, which according to PBCN is reporting the highest crime rate in the country.

“Our engagement with government representatives was constructive, but recent incidents have made the need for quick implementation all the more critical,” she said.

PBCN leadership is also encouraging anyone with information about the recent shooting to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
