The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has launched an athletic association aimed at increasing community activities.
The association will plan and coordinate activities to correspond with the school calendar.
“We need to see more positive activities in our communities,” said Councillor Devin Bernatchez. “We know there is a gang, drug and gun crisis that we’re seeing. We feel if we can build and empower these young people and build relationships with families and Elders that we’ll see more positive results.”
He explained that all sports and recreation, arts and crafts, music and traditional activities are to be explored to get more people interested.
A call for volunteers is now out to help organize activities and tournaments or to coach youth.
Bernatchez said the association will access grants, prevention funds and casino revenues to help fund activities.
