RCMP said it has requested the Serious Incident Response Team to monitor the interactions between the Major Crimes Investigation unit and Dominic Kahpoonapit.

The human remains of Kahpoonapit were discovered near a home on the Big Island Lake First Nation on Tuesday.  He was reported missing in December.

RCMP said officers with the Pierceland made contact with Kahpoonapit in the days prior to him being reported as missing. He was not arrested or charged during this interaction, nor was he in police custody.

Mounties said it was a proactive measure to involve SIRT.

Kahpoonapit’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed and investigators are working to put together a timeline of his activities in the days leading to his disappearance.
