Saskatchewan RCMP are confirming that a leader from James Smith Cree Nation is facing impaired driving charges.

According to RCMP on March 10 officers from the Melfort detachment were patrolling on the First Nation. Police said they initiated a traffic stop which led to them starting an impaired driving investigation.

Police said 62-year-old Calvin Sanderson, who is listed as Chief of the Chakastaypasin Band, which is one of the three bands that make up James Smith Cree Nation, is charged with operation while impaired.

Sanderson is set to appear in Melfort Provincial Court on May 29.
