The File Hills First Nations Police Service is getting an additional $40,000 this year and $357,000 over the next five years to help address policing in that area.

The added money comes after Ottawa increased its yearly contribution to First Nations policing. That police force is under a nine-year federal-provincial cost-sharing agreement.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to partner with the File Hills First Nations Police Service and support them through this ongoing funding agreement,” Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Christine Tell said. “The File Hills First Nations Police Service is an excellent example of how government and First Nations can work together to provide proactive, culturally sensitive policing.”

The increased funding is retroactive to 2019 and will apply until 2028. The 10 officers and three special constables of the File Hills First Nations Police Service have jurisdiction over 450 square kilometers, within five First Nations.
