RCMP said one man is dead following a shootout with police on the Cumberland House Cree Nation Thursday.

Mounties said they responded to a home on Pemmican Portage Ave, observing a person with a firearm. Shortly after encountering the house, three people would surrender to police and a firearm would be seized.

RCMP allege that some people remained in the house, discharging their firearms, and not comply with police orders.

One person inside the house exchanged fire with the RCMP Critical Incident Response Team.

Shortly before 5PM, a fourth suspect would leave the house, being arrested without incident. Authorities claim the man indicated an injured person was still in the house.

The unidentified Prince Albert man was transported to hospital but would die of his injuries. Moose Jaw Police Service has been tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances of the death.

The Ministry of Justice will appoint an independent observer. The four other people arrested remain in custody.
