Some Elders in the northwest have been getting donated wild game.

The Turnor Lake and Birch Narrows Community Food Centre has received five moose and one elk, from hunters in the Meadow Lake area.

“I finally met some guys. And they reached out to me and said, We want to help you pay for our gas and pay for our shells. And we’re going to help you as much as we can,” said co-founder Rebecca Lemaigre.

She explained that COVID-19 and weather conditions prevented her from taking children out for a harvest, but that her father and others successfully took two moose.

Lemaigre was recently in Ile a la Crosse, where traditional meals were prepared and distributed to community Elders there.

“We actually got to have three elders and a young lady come and join us. There were five of us that they allowed to come. And they helped me and I showed them how to dry meat, how to smoke. And I believe all of that went really fast and dry meat is like gold,” she said.

Lemaigre said that she plans on going to La Loche and Clearwater River Dene to continue her program. If people would like to donate wild game, they can contact the Turnor Lake and Birch Narrows Community Food Centre Facebook Page.
