A man born and raised in Prince Albert and a former consultant of Indigenous economic development will be taking over the role as Chief Operating Officer of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan.

Matt Vermette will be the Métis Nation’s new COO after Louise Simard retired from the position last year.

The MN-S sent out a media release Wednesday afternoon with the announcement.

Prior to joining the MN-S, Vermette was the CEO of the Northern Research group, a Métis owned consulting firm with offices in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

Vermette was also recently recognized as Saskatchewan’s 2021 Indigenous Economic Developer of the Year by the Saskatchewan Indigenous Economic Development Network.

In the media release, the MN-S says Vermette’s experience, education, and personal background will be an asset to the Métis government.

“He has a strong connection to the land and when he’s not working or spending time with his husband Sam and newborn son Archer, he can often be found harvesting game or traditional resources throughout his family’s traditional territory of St. Laurent, Duck Lake, Horse Lake, and Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan” stated the media release from the MN-S.
