La Loche RCMP deployed a conducted energy weapon (CEW), otherwise known as a taser, during an arrest in the community last week.

Police received a report Wednesday evening of an intoxicated 33-year-old man refusing to leave a residence.

When RCMP arrived, the man was cooperative. However, police say soon after the man became assaultive.

The man and the officer struggled on the ground before both getting back up. RCMP say the officer showed the accused his baton, but didn’t use it.

The taser was deployed but it was ineffective.

A second officer then came and assisted in arresting the man.

Neither the accused nor the officer required medical attention after the arrest.

The 33-year-old man was charged with breach of probation, assaulting an officer and resisting an officer. His next court appearance will be on Dec. 6 in La Loche.
