The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, known as Janssen, will be available for Saskatchewan residents beginning Wednesday.

The Janssen vaccine requires only one shot to be considered fully vaccinated. Residents who receive this vaccine will be fully immunized two weeks after the shot.

The provincial government announced Tuesday that 2,500 single dose vaccines will be available at certain clinics in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Estevan, Melfort, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, and Lloydminster starting Wednesday, with more cities getting the vaccine in the future.

Due to the limited amount of doses, the Janssen vaccine will be available on a walk-in basis only.

Janssen is a viral vector vaccine which uses a bit of a modified virus to generate an immune response.

Residents wanting another vaccine dose after getting the Janssen vaccine will be eligible for a Moderna or Pfizer shot two months after their initial dose. The Janssen vaccine cannot be used as a third, or booster, shot.
