The preliminary hearing is underway for five people accused in the death of La Ronge substitute teacher Sheena Billette.

Oral arguments are being heard over the next three days at the Elks Hall in Air Ronge.

26-year-old Charlie Charles, 31-year-old Deborah McKenzie, 26-year-old Telsa McKenzie and 26-year-old Sharise Sutherland-Kayseas were charged with first degree murder.

The four were previously also charged with forcible confinement and kidnapping.

Another woman was charged with accessory after the fact to murder but this charge was stayed in October.

Billette’s body was found early in the morning on December 23, 2019 on Highway 102 about seven kilometres north of La Ronge by a passing motorist.

The accused were arrested and charged a month later.

The hearing is expected to continue for two more days and there has been a publication ban placed on evidence related to the case as it could potentially go to trial.
